Message From the Fire Chief re: Joplin

The following is a short message from Fire Chief David Hall regarding just a small part of the efforts from Springfield Police officers and firefighters in Joplin.

All Personnel,
The recent events at Joplin have been an extraordinary test of the entire region. Springfield launched an unprecidented response, including the Fire Department. I can't compliment all of our personnel enough. I know that virtually everyone has wanted to assist, but for logistical reasons, that probably will not be possible.

Many firefighters, including our own Teresa Newton, lost their homes during the tornado. Yet, they continue to help others. Here is a story that was done with Teresa today.

I know the Local has spearheaded efforts of taking off-duty personnel to assist the families of firefighters recover from their loss. I know this has meant a lot to everyone.

Over the years, we have made some outstanding progress in many areas, but particularly in our technical rescue, swift water, and hazardous materials specialties. We have seen this on many occassions, and this event was no different. Here is a link to an outstanding story about our crews. Chief Williams did a great job on the interview.

I just wanted to say that I am very proud of each of you that jumped in to help, as well as those that took care of business here in Springfield while the others were away. The City Manager has been very complimentary, and appreciative, as well.

Keep up the good work.
David
